Statistics New Zealand, Hot
off the Press, December 2000
- Alcohol
Available for Consumption
- Year to December 2000
Total Wine, Beer and Spirits available for consumption in New Zealand
Total alcohol consumed in New Zealand has been falling since the
early 1980s. Over recent years total beer has been declining,
although higher strength brands have been selling well. Wine
consumption has been increasing, as has spirits, particularly in the
form of premixed spirits based drinks - 'alco-pops'.
For the latest annual data on 'alcohol available for consumption
in New Zealand' see Statistics NZ's website for its publication Hot
Off The Press: Alcohol
and Tobacco Available for Consumption. This data is based on data supplied by the alcohol
industry for excise tax purposes. It takes into account local production plus imports minus exports but does not include home
produced alcohol.
